A rare late 16th / 17th C. Very large carved walnut sarcophagus shaped cassone, The rectangular shaped top having a gadroon carved edge and opening to a large storage area. The sarcophagus body having wonderful carved leaf design with armorial cartouche to the centre. The whole standing on a moulded base with claw feet. Each end retaining the original iron carrying handles. Condition- The lid a possible later replacement but does have a conforming carved edge and the backboard also probably a 19th.C. repair. Dimensions:- Height...20’’/ 51cm. Width...70’’/ 178cm. Depth…23.5’’/ 59.5cm. Delivery to most of U.K. £75.
