An important 18th-century British oil portrait depicting Captain Gamaliel Nightingale in formal Royal Navy uniform.
Bonhams catalogued the unsigned painting directly under John Simmons (Nailsea 1715–1780 Bristol).

Catalogue Note
The reverse preserves Bonhams auction evidence and an older Nightingale identification, creating an unusually interesting documentary history.
The Sitter
Nightingale entered the Royal Naval Academy in 1744.
He became Commander of HMS Badger in 1757 and was promoted Captain on 18 October 1758.
He subsequently commanded HMS Vengeance and HMS Flora during the Seven Years’ War.
His name also survives through Nightingale Island.
The Artist
John Simmons was an 18th-century portrait painter associated with Nailsea, Bristol and the West Country.
Bonhams catalogued the present portrait directly under Simmons's name.
