John Scott RBA RI ROI Oil Pretty Young Woman John Scott Artist RBA RI ROI %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer for sale this beautifully painted and rare interior scene by the artist John Scott, who has signed the painting J. Scott in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a pretty young woman carrying a pewter platter, on which is standing an incised stoneware jug. She is wearing 18th century dress, with an overdress in white sprigged with flowers, gathered up to show a pale underskirt, with a frilled hem. She has a lace fichu around the neckline and is wearing a frilled mob cap with blue ribbon. His paintings only rarely come to the market.

The room, which may be a dining room, has a gateleg table and chairs under the open leaded window and there is a pewter plate bearing bread and cheese on the table. On the window sill is a red geranium in a clay pot and, about the enter the room, is a cheeky magpie. Interestingly, the last painting we sold by this artist, which was a watercolour, also featured a magpie.

John Scott 1850-1918 was born in Carlisle Cumberland in 1850. He was a genre, literary and historical painter in oils and watercolours. We have been unable to discover much information about his actual life both personal and artistic, but he was a well exhibited and recognised artist. There is a short biography of him on Wikipedia.

From before 1881, he was living at the Mall Studios, Parkhill Road, Hampstead, London with his wife Georgina Ellen.

He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1882, a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1885 and a Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1883.

He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.

He exhibited from 1862 and at the Royal Academy ( 20 paintings) from 1872, RI (96), ROI (61), Glasgow Institute (10), Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, (36) and elsewhere at the major provincial galleries.

His oil paintings achieve prices in the thousands of pounds at auction, with the record in recent years being over £10,000 at Sothebys in New York in 2004. His watercolours also achieve high prices with the record being £1,200 for a 14" x 10" at Bonhams in Bath in 2003 and most reaching the middle hundreds.

The painting is framed in a nice 3 1/4" ornate gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
