Anglo Japanese - style was developed in the UK from circa 1851 to the 1910s when a new appreciation for Japanese design and culture influenced how Arts and Crafts designers and crafts people made "British Art" and especially decorative arts including furniture and English architecture. Important centres specifically included London and Glasgow.
The table is attributed to H W Batley. Henry William Batley (1842-1932) was a British Aesthetic Movement, Arts and Crafts Artist and Designer who worked actively in London from 1870s to the first decade of the twentieth century and was highly acclaimed as an artistic etcher and designer of furniture, textiles, carpets, wallpapers and total schemes of decoration for many of England's leading manufacturers such as James Shoolbred & Co.
His furnishings were exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876, the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878 and the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.
James Shoolbred & Co (aka Jas Shoolbred) was established in the 1820s at 155 Tottenham Court Road, London W1 and became famous for designing, manufacturing and selling high quality furniture. In the 1880s Shoolbred had opened London's first large department store at Tottenham House on Tottenham Court Road.
In the mid 1880s, Shoolbred was granted a Royal Warrant, testament to the excellent design aesthetic and high quality of their furniture.
