J F Branegan Watercolour Shipping Off Liverpool

An interesting 19th century watercolour of shipping off Liverpool Docks by John Francis Branegan (1843-1909) in good antique condition and attractively presented in a gilt wood frame. Signed bottom left with the date 1882.
Dimensions: height 48 x width 68 x depth 2.2 cm
(18 3/4 x 26 3/4 inches)
Weight 2.58 kg
Condition: Very good antique condition, relatively recently framed.
Biography: John Branegan was born in 1840. Little is known of Branegan, but it would appear that soon after his marriage he settled in London making his living as a painter, residing for some time at 118, Stanhope Street and later at 9, St. Thomas' Gardens. It is probable that he moved to Whitby about 1880 or 1881 as he exhibited a number of pictures in the Yorkshire Fine Art Exhibition at Leeds in 1882 and the following year in the Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Institution Exhibition in York.
It was the painting of the sea, which particularly fascinated Branegan, either in powerful stormy scenes or peaceful atmospheric paintings.
Branegan exhibited at the RA. Several of his works are on display in Whitby Museum.
