Grand Tour Watercolour by Maria Lushington, c1820s

A charming Regency watercolour of The Bay of Naples by Maria Lushington. It is a romantic depiction of an elegantly dressed couple walking beside a ruined building with the Bay in the distance.
The label on the reverse provides a short biography of the artist: Maria Lushington (1800-1855). The eldest daughter of Sir Henry Lushington, Bt., British Consul General in Naples from 1815-1832, she was born in London. Her reconstructions of Pompeii areprobably based on original sketches for Sir W Gell Pompeiana, 1832 to which they owe a striking similarity. The fact that she knew Gell can be deduced from his inclusion in one of her drawings. Her landscapes and interiors are accomplished although the overall effect is rendered charmingly naïve by her fanciful colours and uncertain drawing of fixtures and fittings. She signed "Maria" tout court.
Dimensions: Frame 35 x 43 cm, Image 15.5 x 22 cm
Condition: The watercolour has not been inspected outside the frame but it appears to be in very good condition and attractively mounted and framed. The gilt frame has been touched up with gold paint where there were some scuff marks.
Postage & packing: £10 within the UK. Please contact David if you would like a quote to send to an international destination.
