Great 19th-century Neoclassical Painting
A magnificent Italian mythological painting from the first half of the 19th century. A large oil on canvas artwork, first canvas, depicting the myth of Europa. According to legend, Zeus, in love with the Phoenician princess, transformed himself into a shining white bull to approach her. The young girl and her maids, drawn by the animal's beauty and gentleness, caressed it and crowned it with flowers. Europa mounted the bull's back, and it was then that Zeus leaped into the sea, carrying her to Crete.
The painting captures a rare and rarely depicted moment, the moment before the violence, where Europa is not the victim but the central, poetic figure. A work of the Neoclassical school, the grace of the figures and the chromatic balance reveal the hand of an Italian artist of great culture and sensitivity.
Perfect for an elegant living room or library, the painting can also easily be placed in a modern setting. The frame is a contemporary, beautifully decorated carved and gilded wood frame, with some missing gilding. The painting has already been restored, with some minor color changes.
