Edwardian 15ct Gold, Turquoise & Pearl Brooch 1901
Here we have a very elegant Edwardian 15ct Gold Brooch set with Turquoise and Seed Pearls. The brooch has a wavy central bar with a row of alternating turquoise and seed pearls running across it and ending with rope effect spirals. It comes supplied in a modern gift box.
The brooch is hallmarked for Chester in 1901 and is made by Frederick Banks. Banks was a goldsmith and jeweller based in Birmingham who registered his mark in 1881 and continued working into the early years of the 20th century. Although Birmingham based, all his work seems to be hallmarked in Chester.
15ct gold (62.5% pure) was a British standard in the late 19th and early 20th century that was gradually superceded by the American 14ct standard. Very little 15ct gold was made after the First World War and it ceased to be a British standard in the early 1930s.
Condition is very good with no damage. The turquoise and seed pearls are all present and secure. The pin is perfectly functional and holds the brooch securely onto a garment. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The brooch is 4.3cm long and 1cm high. It weighs in at 2.7g.
The hallmarks, on the back of the brooch, are nice and clear to read. They show the 15 and 625 stamps for 15ct gold, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter A for 1901 and the F B makers' mark for Frederick Banks.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the brooch.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
