The Victorians developed a passion for oriental furniture at the end of the 19thC and copies of Chinese furniture were mass produced in London to meet demand. Like the pineapple a century before this was a vanity piece to say ‘I have travelled widely, I am knowledgeable and wise’. Today tables like this make attractive ornaments for hallways or even bedrooms. This six-legged piece has lacquered paintings on the top, base and all outward facing surfaces – the inner facing ones are bare. I have owned this for over 20 years and it is a real conversation piece.
