A very large, single-stone, purple sapphire, Chinese, high-carat, gold ring. Size Q/R. The ring is transverse set with a rectangular purple sapphire with scissor cut borders in a rub-over, closed back setting integral to the heavy gauge bright yellow gold band. The stone is approximately 12mm x 10mm. Because of the closed back, it is difficult to estimate the weight of the stone. A standard emerald-cut stone of this size would weigh over 5 carats, but this one is likely to be less deep. There are Chinese character marks to the inside of the band, indicating the purity of gold - the second characters says "gold", but the first character is rubbed. The ring is in good condition for a high-carat gold ring of it age, which is likely to be early 20th century. However, the band is shaped to the finger of its wearer, has a noticeable mark on the inside. The rub-over mount has worn away from the stone in places. See also photographs.
