Art Deco 1930's Three Flowers Ladies Compact
This is an incredibly rare 1930's Art Deco double compact by Richard Hudnut and is featured in many reference books on the subject of collectable compacts. One of the main criterias which command high desirability and collectability is condition and this compact has it in abundance. So often found with flaking enamel or specs and chips of enamel missing. Not this one, it's in the best condition you could hope for. One could easily think it's not ever been used when viewing the exterior however the interior shows signs of use with traces of powder.
The lid is enamelled in a rich cream and chestnut brown. The silhouetted profile faces are shown in the two contrasting colours. The hinge is tight and the large flip-down clasp closes securely. The back is engine turned and in excellent condition. The lid lifts to reveal a silver metal mirror that separates the powder from the rouge. The lid opens to reveal a multi level powder well and marked on the edge of the compact Richard Hudnut made in U.S.A. and THREE FLOWERS. This fabulous and rare compact still retains it's original rouge puff, with a lambswool on one side and pink leather the other which is stamped Richard Hudnut.
We've added some historical pictures showing inside Richard Hudnut's store and the exterior of his store in New York.
Bio
Around 1880, a small pharmacy was opened in New York city and sold perfumes, cosmetics and assorted toiletries. Richard Hudnut, the son of the proprietor of the shop, became the first American selling luxury perfume presentations, (though some of these were created in France) in an elegant shop which was directly influenced by the French and European perfumeries. Richard Hudnut’s legacy is based on his creation of perfumery and cosmetics of notable quality, which were presented in distinctively decorated, and packaged containers. These beautiful and artful containers made Richard Hudnut perfumes and cosmetics still very collectable today.
The Richard Hudnut business was then acquired by William R. Warner & Co which, in 1955, became the Warner-Lambert Pharmaceuticals Co., which was later acquired by Parke-Davis in 1970, which, in turn, was merged into Pfizer in 2000.
