Abraham Cooper R.A Coastal Watercolour Dated 1864

Abraham Cooper, R.A. (1787–1868)
Fisherfolk by the Shore, 1864
Watercolour on paper mounted to board
Signed lower left, in red: “Ab Cooper 1864”
Measurements
Sight: 70 × 20.5 cm
Frame: 90 × 42 cm
A fine mid-Victorian genre subject by Cooper—better known, of course, for equestrian pictures—yet consistent with broader commissioned themes he undertook in his later years.
Cooper worked in oil and watercolour his strengths were crisp drawing and accurate equine anatomy. He died on 24 December 1868 and is buried at Highgate Cemetery. His work is represented in major UK collections, including the Tate, the V&A and the Government Art Collection.
Signature notes
Cooper used both an “AC” monogram and a fuller “Ab. Cooper.” In late signatures the “oo” flows directly into a tall rising stroke that forms the stem of the open “p,” before dropping into the descender—one of his tell-tale traits.
The subject’s signature matches Cooper’s late hand: the looped A forming his familiar AC flourish, followed by “Cooper.” Authenticated examples for comparison are shown in the above images.
This fine, sharp and uncommon example is mounted in a glazed frame and is ready to hang.
