This is a fabulous early 18th Century English boarded / plank chest in a dark coloured elm with a beautifully carved front standing on prominent bracket feet. The attractively faded top lifts on iron hinges to reveal a spacious interior with a candle box, below which are four faux and one working drawers. The front is exceptionally well carved with three arches, the carved detail extending to the spandrels between the arches, and to the frieze.

Dimensions: Width 109 x Depth 52 x Height 69 cm
This is on the large size for a plank coffer and is rather more like a medium sized panelled coffer.

Condition: The chest is in very good condition with all joints firm. The top and sides are made from single elm boards with only the base made from several boards. The underneath of the lid has been re-enforced with two pieces of timber and a small fillet has been added to the floor. The chest has been cleaned and waxed in our workshop giving it a lovely lustrous finish.
