William Henry Mander Oil Gwynant Valley N. Wales

We are offering for sale this large oil on canvas by the artist William Henry Mander, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 99 for 1899. He has also signed and dated it verso and entitled it 'In the Abergwynant Valley near Arthog'. The painting depicts the river Gwynant, which is a small tributory of the River Mawddach, near to its confluence with the Mawddach, as Aber in Welsh means mouth or confluence. The river is bubbling through boulder strewn banks, with mountains in the distance. To the right hand side, there are two female figures, picking berries or flowers higher up the bank.
William Henry Mander, born 1851, was a Birmingham landscape painter in both oils and watercolour. He flourished between 1880 and 1914. He painted principally scenes in the Midlands and North Wales and he was known for a painting style similar to that of Benjamin Williams Leader in his later work.
He lived in Birmingham, but in the late 1890s move to Dolgellau in Wales, where he is listed in the 1901 Census as living at 5 Mount Pleasant, Dolgellau, Merionethshire with his wife Louisa (34) and being an artist and landscape painter. It was during this time in Wales that he painted this picture. After about 5 years in Wales, he moved to Lincoln, then Sheffield, before finally returning to Birminham. The date of his is uncertain at this time.
He never exhibited in London Exhibitions, but exhibited 66 works at the Royal Society of British Artists in Birmingham, 14 at the Royal Hibernian Academy and 7 at the Royal Cambrian Academy. His biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club).
Auction results achieved for works by this artist may be found at artprice (332 listings), Artnet (275), findartinfo (159) and arcadja 140). He was a very prolific artist.
The painting is newly framed in a 3 1/2" ornate, swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
