Elegant oak corner cupboard by the celebrated Welsh makers Brynmawr & Clydach Valley Industries c.1935. Glazed two door top fitted with two shelves over a two door cupboard with a single shelf inside (max internal depth 16"). Simple design in the manner of Heals, The Brynmawr style was informed by the company's Quaker roots. With only minimum moulded decoration and manufactured in oak in it's natural colour. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Accompanying the piece is an original letter from the Brynmawr company relating to the cupboard and dated August 15th, 1935.
The Brynmawr antique furniture workshop was set up in 1929 as part of a Quaker led experiment to bring employment to the town of Brynmawr in South Wales whose industry had been devastated by the Great Depression. Under the direction of the designer Paul Matt Brynmawr produced a range of good quality furniture with solid oak frames and laminated panels in a modernist Quaker style with little ornament which could be made by the newly trained workers. Matt left the company in 1936 and production ceased shortly after the outbreak of war.
