Welsh Glazed Dresser or Cwpwrdd Gwydr c.1860.
Good example of a mid 19th.c. mahogany enclosed dresser or bookcase, produced here in North Wales and known locally as a cwpwrdd gwydr (glass or glazed cupboard), c.1860. Glazed top with two doors either side of removable centre panel and fitted inside with three long adjustable shelves. Flared cornice, raised mouldings to the glazed doors, shaped drawer fronts and large shield shaped cupboard door panels in flame mahogany veneers, applied carved corbels to both pieces. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Key supplied. Splits into two sections for ease of delivery.
A development of the classic open rack Welsh dresser, the cwpwrdd gwydr could be used as display for prized pieces of porcelain etc or as a bookcase (or a mix of the two). The glass doors affording extra protection from dust and dirt, whilst the use of mahogany rather than traditional oak was a statement of fashion and status.
Dimensions: Dimensions width 55″, depth 21″, height 87″. Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes. Alternatively you are welcome to view and collect at our large warehouse showroom in Llandudno Junction, North Wales (approximately 45mins from Chester).
