Walnut Adjustable Reading Stand By John Carter


This is a Victorian reading table by John Carter of London in walnut, also called the Literary Machine.
Lovely example of library antique furniture, fully configurable the top tilts and slides for the perfect position as well as raising freely on the patented ratchet system.
There are hinged flaps to both top and bottom edges.
Made from British Oak the quarterfoil base is raised on four original castors with inset lead weight for added stability.
The thick, turned and fluted central column has a 'nibbed' naval look to it.
Complete with John Carter's Ivorian plaque and all original stamped iron ratchet mechanism.
In very good original condition, with marks to surface that add to the wonderful patination.
Date : 1870
Size Height 73 cm rising to 105 cm x 82 cm wide.
