Vintage Silver Dressing Table Set, B'ham, 1983
This is a striking cased Vintage Sterling Silver Backed Four Piece Dressing Table Set. The set consists of a hand mirror, a hair brush, a clothes brush and a comb. The silver backs are decorated with embossed scrolling foliage from which the Green Man peers out at you whilst a bird perches at the top and Herne the Horned Man sits at the base of the handle and in profile on either side of the clothes brush. The cartouches are all blank.
These traditional English folklore figures were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when there was a great revival in interest in folk song, traditional customs and folklore in general. Although made much later, these pieces are produced from the original Edwardian dies.
The dressing table set was made in Birmingham by Broadway & Co and dates to 1983. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company.
Condition is very good, with just a few little dings around the rims of the brushes and the spine of the comb. The brushes are clean and the comb has all of its teeth. The mirror glass is very slightly marked but gives a nice clear reflection. The box is in good condition with both the clasps and the hinge in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mirror is 23.5cm / 9.2ins long and 12.1cm / 4.8ins across. The hair brush is 22cm / 8.7ins long and 7.5cm / 2.9ins across. The clothes brush is 15.3cm / 6ins long and 3.3cm / 1.3ins across. The comb is 16.5cm / 6.5ins long. Unboxed, the set weighs in at 552g / 19.5oz & in total the boxed set weighs 1.48kg / 52.2oz.
All four pieces are fully hallmarked with the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the cursive date letter I for 1983 and the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £15 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
