Provenance:
Daniel Glenister was a local publican in High Wycombe. If the local chairmakers couldn’t pay their tab at the bar, they would make chairs for him out of spare parts, which he would then sell. He soon found this to be more lucrative than his pub and Glenister’s was founded as a company at Queen’s Square, in 1839. By 1845, the company had moved to Oxford Road and by 1851 employed 50 people. In 1865, the company entered into partnership with John Gibbons, becoming Glenister and Gibbons – this partnership would survive until at least 1888. By 1895 Daniel’s son Thomas Glenister was operating out of Temple End, a substantial site base around the 17th-18th Century farmhouse called Temple House, in High Wycombe. The business primarily produced Windsor-style chairs, refectory antique tables, settees and armchairs, also taking orders from the Ministry of Supply, providing antique furniture for barracks, libraries and hospitals. In 1953, the company made stools and chairs for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The company closed in 1990.

Condition Report:
The chair and mechanism are in excellent condition, considering its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The seat is solid and features lovely grain configuration. The adjustable height mechanism is in good working order, having just been cleaned, restored and serviced. There is some play to the mechanism but this is perfectly acceptable, and in line with the age of the chair. The chair features a mellow elm colour, having been cleaned and French polished in our workshops. The chair sits on four splayed solid elm legs that terminate on replacement solid brass castors, which are made in England. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
