Victorian Silver Sifter Spoon, Jos. Williams, 1895
This is an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Sifter Spoon in the revived Hanoverian style with an upturned end to the stem. The lower section of the stem is twisted and the bowl is scalloped with an attractive pierced pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The spoon is made by Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol and assayed in London in 1895. The firm traced its history back to William Woodman in Bristol in the early years of the 19th century becoming Josiah Williams & Co in 1877, at which point George Maudsley Jackson became the controlling partner. They were a hugely successful firm and remained in business until the Second World War.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sifter spoon is 11.9cm / 4.7ins long and weighs 19.7g / 0.69oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter U for 1895 and the G M J makers' mark for George Maudsley Jackson of Josiah Williams & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
