Victorian Silver Cream Jug, Nathan & Hayes, 1893
This is an ornate Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug has extensive embossed acanthus leaf decoration on a textured background with intermittent wrythen decoration rising from the base. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug was made in Birmingham by Nathan & Hayes and dates to 1893. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in Birmingham in the late 1880s. They are particularly known for their good quality silver tableware, which they primarily assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.
Condition is very good with just a couple of very shallow dings in the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug measures 10.5cm / 4.1ins from lip to handle, 6.2cm / 2.4ins across the top rim and 6.9cm / 2.7ins in height. It weighs in at a very respectable 57.5g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the top rim near the handle, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter t for 1893 and the G.N over R.H makers' mark for George Nathan & Ridley Hayes.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
