Victorian Glass & Silver Perfume Bottle, 1881

This is an elegant Victorian Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Perfume Bottle. The cylindrical bottle has a flat base, a star cut body and a silver screw thread around the neck. The silver lid has embossed acanthus leaf decoration and a cork insert to form a seal when the lid is screwed tight. It is an ideal size for keeping in a small evening bag.
The perfume bottle was made in Birmingham by C.C. May & Son and dates to 1881. Charles May founded his firm in Shoreditch in London in 1838. By 1881 they had moved to Hackney and become C.C. May & Son. The company specialised in silver mounted glass, particularly dressing table and grooming items and match strikes, and also in silver thimbles, which they produced in considerable quantity. They registered marks in both London and Birmingham. The firm ceased trading in the early 1920s.
Condition is good, with just a couple of tiny nibbles around the base of the glass and the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 145 years of use. The lid screws on smoothly and securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The perfume bottle stands 7.7cm / 3ins high and is 2.2cm / 0.87ins in diameter. It weighs 41.8g / 1.47oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the lid, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter g for 1881 and the C M makers' mark for C.C. May & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £6.00 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
