Victorian Cut Glass Vanity Pot w/ Silver Lid, 1898
Here we have a top quality late Victorian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a hallmarked Sterling Silver lid. The round glass pot has alternating panels of hobnail and diamond cut glass around the body and a star cut on the base where the pontil mark would have been. The Sterling Silver lid is extensively decorated with scrolls and foliage surrounding a central cartouche, which is blank. The interior of the lid is gilded. This would look great on a dressing table, bedside cabinet or desk today or would be a great addition to a collection.
The dressing table pot is made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Levi & Salaman and dates to 1898. Levi & Salaman are renowned for their exquisitely decorated personal items. Founded in the mid-1880s by Phineas Levi and Joseph Salaman, they remained in business until they were taken over by Barker Brothers in the early 1920s.
Condition is good with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a couple of small dings in the silver lid, which is very common with these pots. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot is 5.3cm / 2.1ins in diameter and stands 4.2cm / 1.7ins high. The Sterling Silver lid weighs 10.1g / 0.36oz by itself and the pot and lid together weigh in at 84.4g / 2.9oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the lid are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter y for 1898 and the L&S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
