Victorian burr walnut reading table, "John Carter's Literary Machine" This interesting piece Consists of an occasional table (adjustable height) and adjustable reading arm (adjustable in height and width), held in place by brass rods. Standing on a cast iron base with paw feet and brass castors. The label of ‘John Carter’s Patent Literary Machine – Trade Mark Registered – 6A New Cavendish St., Portland Place, London, W’ is to the back of the reading support. 1270mm (adjustable) 480mm diameter. Circa 1880

John Carter was a Victorian inventor and cabinet maker and produced several designs of patented ‘Literary Machines’, operating out of his London premises. W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries. Now under the stewardship of Mark and his wife, Louise, we take pride in maintaining the high standards which William set more than 50 years ago.
