Victorian Bruce Talbert Design Oak Dining Chairs Victorian spindle chairs Bruce J Talbert %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A very attractive set of four oak spindle back dining chairs in the reformed Gothic style and dating to circa 1880/90. These chairs are characteristic of Bruce J. Talbert's design for a standard dining chair - see for instance "Victorian & Edwardian Furniture & Interiors" by Cooper, J. ( 1998 figure 258) and "The Study-Book of Furniture and Furnishing" by O'Kane, J. (1880-89, Plate 51). Bruce Talbert was a famous Scottish architect and furniture designer. His design of the standard dining chair was adapted by various famous Victorian cabinet-makers with variations in terms of the wood used (namely oak, mahogany and walnut), the turning of the spindles and forelegs, the stretchers (turned versus simple square) and ebonised finishes to the spindles and legs. The chairs in question are solid oak. The upholstered seats rest on turned forelegs linked to the back legs with simple H stretchers. The seats have been entirely newly traditionally re-upholstered by The Sitting Place and finished in Meadow Fruit fabric by GP&J Baker (red/green colourway). These sturdy chairs would make ideal breakfast chairs in a cottage-style kitchen or simply as dining chairs. Where applicable, our upholstered items of stock are fully newly traditionally re-upholstered in-house using only traditional materials and no foam so as to be in-keeping with the age of the piece as an antique.

DimensionsApproximate dimensions (at widest point): H 92cm x W 49cm x D 49.5cm Seat height 47cm Date 1880  Late Victorian Antiques Material Oak Maker Bruce Talbert Condition Good original rustic condition with signs of wear to the show wood commensurate with age and past use. In particular, there are various old nicks to the wood to the outside of rear legs, along the uprights of the backs, to some of stretchers and to the corners of some of the seats. Part loss to the bottom inside front foot of one of the chairs visible when looking at the chair from the side, whilst another chair has a very minor loss to one of the feet visible from the front - none of these losses affect the stability and sturdiness of the chairs in question (more photos may be provided upon request).
