Victorian Amboyna Jewellery box by John Mechi

A superb Victorian amboyna jewellery / workbox, from around c.1830. It features an exceptional, richly figured and iridescent amboyna veneer complemented by ornate brass mounts. The interior reveals its original green satin lining, an intact mirror within the lid, and a fitted pull-out tray. An exceptional piece that combines elegance, function, and historical charm.
This box was made by the renown English box maker, John Mechi.
this box was made by a renown box maker in the UK called John Mechi. The box is made from a highly figured amboyna box. This box was made whilst Mechi was at his Leadenhall address before he moved to Regents street, so the date is between 1832-1840ish. I can get a key for this lock and we can make the interior to your specification. I have other suede options on hand that I can use to line it or I can use paper or velvet (I have bought more dark green velvet). The photos are not great. The box looks much better than in the photos but I was running out of time.
John Mechi: History:
John Joseph Mechi, a well-known Victorian-era businessman who gained fame for producing high-quality, beautifully crafted antique boxes. Mechi’s boxes were highly innovative for their time and are now collectible as fine examples of 19th-century craftsmanship.
John Joseph Mechi was born in 1802 in London, and he initially trained as a cutler (maker of cutlery) before branching into other ventures. In the 1830s, he opened a shop at 4 Leadenhall Street in London, where he began designing and selling unique boxes which became especially popular.
Many of Mechi’s boxes were made of exotic hardwoods like rosewood, amboyna, ebony or mahogany and were often adorned with brass inlays and lockable features for added security. They showcased fine craftsmanship, with features such as cleverly concealed drawers.
