Verge Bracket Clock Enamel Dial - Martin , London
This is a very fine ebony veneered verge bracket antique clock by Martin , Royal Exchange , London circa 1780 . Thomas Martin was one of a dynasty of fine clockmakers who can be traced back to 1668 . Thomas himself was admitted to the clockmakers Company in 1771 and died in 1811.
The use of large enamel dials was very uncommon at this time as the ability to manufacture them was only developed in the middle of the 18th Century. This style of clock was made popular by the famous maker John Ellicott
The double fusee 8 day duration movement retains its original verge escapement and has a beautifully engraved back plate depicting scrolls , foliage and a Chinese pagoda .It strikes the hours on a bell and has a pull repeat facility .
The refined inverted bell top case has gilt brass edged doors and is surmounted by a carrying handle . The sides are glazed to allow the movement to be seen.
Worthy of note are the original pierced hands.
The 7 circular white enamel dial is very pleasing to the eye and is signed by the maker . It has a concentric sweep hand to show the date and the dial is II remarkable original condition with only some tiny hairline cracks around the edge which cannot be seen with the front door closed . The clock is in perfect working order having been expertly restored by Overton Clocks of Chesterfield.
As can be seen from the images this clock is in excellent condition throughout and is ready to be displayed in the home. The restored ebonised case has a high shine and is in superb condition . It will delight the most discerning client.
This is 18 1/2 inches tall The width is 11 1/2 inches and the depth 7 .
