Untouched Gillows Designed Davenport Retailed by J Winter

A superb quality and completely original Gillow designed davenport retailed and stamped JAMES WINTER & SON, 101 WARDOUR STREET, SOHO, LONDON. The whole in very good untouched condition and retaining a fine colour and patina. The sloping rectangular top having a worn leather inset writing surface with a turned baluster gallery to the back. The fall lifts to reveal two interior drawers and two faux drawers with turned pulls. The two dummy drawers concealing the pen and ink drawer which folds open through 90 degrees from the right side. The whole top slides forward to allow easier access for writing and on the left side a retractable document slide with 4 dummy drawers below. The righthand side having 4 conforming graduated drawers with applied mouldings, turned pulls, mahogany linings and working brass and steel locks with key. This davenport is raised on gadrooned feet with inset castors. Dimensions:- Height...35.5\'\'/ 90cm. Width...23.75\'\'/ 60.5cm. Depth...25.75\'\'/ 65.5cm. Delivery to most of U.K. mainland £65.
FOOT NOTE:- James Winter was an important furniture dealer, broker and licensed appraiser based in Soho, London between 1823 and 1840. However the company that he founded is recorded as having traded in second hand furniture until its demise in 1870, probably long after Winter\'s death. In the course of its history, the business was renamed \'James Winter & Sons\' and even re-located a couple of times, albeit always remaining on Wardour Street, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840, ed. by G. Beard and C.
Gilbert, pp 992-3.
One of the only two documented stamps, which reads: \'James Winter & Sons, 101 Wardour St., Soho, London\', features on a large proportion of pieces retailed by the Winter firm and also appears impressed upon this davenport. The offered partners\' desk, as with the vast majority of furniture known to bear Winter\'s name, is a very fine example of George IV period furniture. Several sold pieces in James Winter\'s name are illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, pl\'s 1016-1026, pp 494-8.
