The spinner nut was introduced into the car market in the 1930s till 1960s. It would have come off an MG, Triumph or an Austin car. The spinner or "knock-off" was designed to keep the wheel on the car. They were screwed on and "knocked on tightly" using hammers and tools, hence the name "knock-offs". At some time the nut has been made into a paperweight with a turned wooden base.
