The Authors Benefit Pasquin - 1736
Theatre Admission Ticket for 'The Author's Benefit Pasquin' A Satirical Play by Henry Fielding. The Engraving is signed W. Hogarth (William Hogarth) who was a friend of Fielding's. However, there is controversy as to whether Hogarth was the Engraver. The Engraving has also been attributed to Joseph Sympson, but also, that attribution is questioned by other historians. It is believed that Hogarth only produced 2 benefit tickets for Fielding's plays (1) 'An Old Man Taught Wisdom' and (2) 'Pasquin'.
The play is a brutal satire set against the British Government under Sir Robert Walpole. Walpole retaliated with the Theatre Licensing Act of 1737 and effectively ended Fielding's West End Career.
William Hogarth's signature is in the bottom left hand corner. The Ticket is mounted onto board.
