Superb quality Georgian style carved open armchair
An early 20th century profusely carved Georgian style mahogany open armchair of superb proportions in the manner of Giles Grendey (1693-1780).
The chair consists of an upholstered shaped back and seat finished in a natural colour cotton jacquard fabric with stud decoration.
The arm rests are upholstered leading to finely carved lion mask decoration following down to finely carved and shaped arm supports with carved scrolling foliate designs.
This leads down to a carved moulding and superbly and profusely carved and shaped front and side rails consisting of a lattice design carved background with superbly carved central acanthus and foliate decoration.
The front legs, of cabriole form, are finely carved with lion masks to the knee with a mane leading down to hairy paw feet.
The back legs, again of cabriole style, are outswept with acanthus carving to the knee and leading down to hairy paw feet.
This model is based on an original mid 18th century armchair attributed to the London cabinetmaker Giles Grendey (1693-1780), this particular model dating from around 1740.
An example of the original chair this is based on can be found in 'The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture' by Ralph Edwards page 139, plate 87.
An original chair of this model would seldom be found on the open market, and when they are they demand very high premiums in the tens and probably hundreds of thousands.
Please note that due to the lighting used to photograph this chair the colour of the upholstery is not a true colour, in natural light the colour is slightly darker: a photograph can be taken in natural light and forwarded on request.
This chair is a superb example, it is in excellent condition throughout, is of stable construction, is extremely comfortable and can go straight into a home.
