Sterling Silver ASPREY Cigarette / Card Case 1927
This is just superb! A unique fully hallmarked Asprey sterling silver cigarette case made by one of the most prestigious jewellers / jewelers in Great Britain & gifted by one of the most eccentric English aristocrats - the second Viscount Tredegar - to his chef. Tredegar came from what the 13th Duke of Bedford described as 'the oddest family I have ever met'. He kept many exotic animals, including a boxing kangeroo, a baboon & a honey bear. His house parties were notorious & included H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley & Augustus John as house guests. He was a high ranking member of MI8. The case is inscribed 'FROM VISCOUNT TREDEGAR XMAS 1927'. The case is beautiful - both the lid & base have stylish engine turned designs made up of tiny diamond shapes. The shoulders are sloped & this superb Art Deco antique has the Meander / Greek Key engraved on all the edges lid & base.
The Meander or Greek Key symbolizes eternal life, eternal love and eternal friendship which is why antiques adorned with it are often given as marriage gift
An impressive gift. As well as being beautiful it is also functional having more than enough
room for cigarettes, credit / business cards & money. The case is fully hallmarked London Assay Office & it is in excellent working order & condition. The inner case has excellent gilding & an elastic
strap. Both cases are fully hallmarked 'A & CO LTD, lion passant, leopard's head, date letter m showing that it was assayed as sterling silver at London in 1927.
This antique silver Asprey cigarette case measures 4 1/4" X 3 1/4" & weighs 132.4 grams.
If you visit the modern Asprey site you will see them charging £150.00 for tiny sterling silver money clips weighing less than 30 grams & so this case is a bargain.
