St Ives School Oil Painting by William Eadie
This charming painting of a young woman by a window shows the domestic scene Eadie is known for, with a baby’s crib on the right and a bowl with a spoon on a chair in the foreground. It is dated 1898 on the back of the canvas and signed W. Eadie in the lower right corner. The painting sits in a plain gilt inner frame, which itself has been inserted into an outer, more ornate, frame.
William Eadie originated from Scotland, where he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1868, subsequently moving to London and exhibiting twelve works at the Royal Academy between 1871 and 1894. Towards the end of this period, he moved to St. Ives and was one of the founding members, with his wife Annie, of the St Ives Arts Club. He is usually associated with domestic subjects, but the panels of the Twelve Apostles in St John’s in the Fields church at St Ives were painted by him. He died in London in 1901 and is buried at the famous Highgate cemetery.
Dating to 1898, this is an oil on canvas and originates from England.
In generally good age related condition, there is a small hole in the canvas at the bottom left corner.
