An unusual fully hallmarked sterling silver powder compact made by Henry Clifford Davis in 1961. It is not often possible to source powder compacts made from sterling silver which have the capacity to hold standard pans of compressed face powder. This compact can hold pans of face powder measuring 67 mm diameter such a s Max Factor Creme Puff, Rimmel Stay Matte, CCUK & Miss Beauty. The lid and base are decorated with engine turned designs made of tiny diamond shapes. Engraved on to this design are barleycorn and floral motifs. The interior powder well bears the maker's mark 'HCD' into three conjoined circles, anchor (Birmingham Assay), lion passant (sterling silver)and the date year M (1961). All clasps and hinges work perfectly. The mirror gives a clear and accurate reflection. This is an attractive and useful compact mirror which has a few signs of use which do not detract from its appeal. However, this is reflected in the price. This solid silver vanity measures 7.3 cm and weighs 80.4 grams. Free lavishly illustrated history of this piece included.
