Small Welsh Highback Box Settle c.1820
Unusual little early Welsh 19th.c. highback box settle or hall seat in oak chestnut and pine c.1820. Just 40" wide. Tall and slightly curving backrest with a canopy top and shaped sides all designed to protect the sitter from drafts. Fitted (unusually) with a row of six wooden hooks inside on which to hang hats and coats etc. Shaped arms worm to particularly lovely patina. Board seat lifting on decorative iron hinges to reveal useful storage below for boots and shoes etc. Moulded oak plinth around the base. Great rustic character, very simple construction with some earlier repairs and restorations. Very good colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
