Small Orkney Chair c.1930.


Delightful little example of the classic straw back Orkney chair c.1930. Oak frame with carved detail to the arms, oat straw backrest and a loose woven rush seat. Excellent condition, original through.
Dimensions: width 21″, depth 19″, height 33".
The Orkney chair with it’s distinctive straw back became an icon of the Arts & Crafts movement. A vernacular form produced on a commercial scale from 1870 in the workshop of David Kirkness in Kirkwall on Orkney, they were retailed by Liberty & Co. and could be found in the homes of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Edward VII.
