A very attractive sterling silver Siam niello powder compact c. 1940. The lid shows the highly ornate scene of The Floating Pagoda, a world famous temple pagoda building in Thailand (located in the Phra Samut Chedi District) which floats on water & in front of this is Suphanahongse, The Royal Barge part of the collection of ornate boats now housed in the Royal Barge National Museum on Bangkok Noi Canal. The whole compact is in excellent condition with no loss of niello / design. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The mirror is very good & gives an accurate / clear reflection - a couple of tiny subtle age spots on the mirror that are hard to see. The base shows the enchanting image of Nang Fa (the Fairy of Happiness) – she is dropping stardust from her hand to the floor.
The compact is engraved ' STERLING'. The reflective nature of the lid makes it difficult to photograph. In person it is much more attractive & the engraving on the silver outstandingly beautiful.
This vintage Siam niello compact mirror measures 6.5 cm & weighs 63.7 grams.
