Silver Butter Knife, Cooper Bros, Sheffield, 1936
This is a smart 1930s Sterling Silver Butter Knife in the revived Hanoverian pattern. Originally created in the mid 18th century, the Hanoverian pattern is defined by its upturned end to the stem. The butter knife has no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The butter knife was made in Sheffield by noted silversmiths Cooper Brothers & Sons and dates to 1936. Founded as Cooper Brothers in 1866, they had become Cooper Brothers & Sons by the late 1880s. Although they made a huge range of silverware and silver plate, they are best known for their good quality flatware and cutlery in many different patterns. They remained in business until 1983.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 85 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 12.6cm / 5ins long and weighs in at 14.4g / 0.51ins of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter t for 1936 and the C B & S makers' mark for Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
