Set of Eight 18th C Yew and Elm Windsor Chairs

A very beautiful set of eight early windsor chairs comprising two carvers and six standards with lovely wheelback splats and bulbous turned legs. The rails in yew as are the legs, the seats in elm and all with a fabulous and consistent colour.
Very solid and substantial with no weak joints and entirely suitable for use. Two of the chairs - one of the carvers and one single - appear matched as although of the same age and virtually identical there are small differences. These need quite some studying to notice but make me feel they are not made by the same hand/workshop.
It is extremely rare to find eight such early chairs in yew and the colour is superb and consistent throughout. Minor dings and dents, bruises and marks. Both carvers have had old repairs to the arms - solid and not requiring any attention, some of the shaped H stretchers have professionally replaced elements which are well blended and extremely difficult to distinguish from the originals even for a trained eye on close inspection. Two elm seats have some old scratches which are not unpleasant and do not detract from look or use. All entirely consistent with age and use as chairs of such great age have had 250 years and generations of use so inevitably almost all have some small repairs or replacements - it would be rather odd if they did not.
A wonderful and rarely found large set of yew wood wheel back windsor chair c. 1780.
