Scottish,Georgian,Horn,Agate and Silver Snuff-Mull
A Scottish, horn snuff mull with agate,silver-mounted lid (unmarked mounts and agate – ca. 1800 - length 10 cm, diameter of lid 4.5cm, length.
This fine and attractive traditional Scottish mull is fitted with a translucent polished convex agate. The stone has a pale grey background with swirling yellow/tan markings and is set in a well-made, but unmarked silver mount with a scalloped and reeded border. It dates from the late 18th/early 19th Century.
The overall condition is very good consistent with age and use. The observations below ae intended for completeness and transparency, but do not materially detract from the aesthetics or function of the piece. The silverwork and hinge is all in good order. There is no movement of the stone within the mount, but a small crack at the edge by the thumbpiece (not easily visible from the outside). The horn is well-polished and gernally in excellent conditon, but there is a small old crack (ca 7mm) long below the mount to the right of the hinge. See also photos.
I trade in small silver, jewellery and objets d'art. I sell primarily at antiques fairs and in cabinets in Christique Antique Centre in Dorking. I try to find unusual and interesting stock and like to keep turning it over, so I can buy more. Postage and packing are free within the UK - unless explicitly stated otherwise. I keep hardly any stock at home, if you want to buy something and need it urgently, I will usually do it the next day, but it may take me some time to respond if you need extra photographs and/or details about the piece that I do not have to hand, as I typically visit the antiques centre just once a week.
