Scottish Victorian Oak Kitchen Preparation Table

A superb large 19th Century Scottish Estate preparation table with a planked oak top and pitch pine base on stout outsplayed tapering legs. With five 1½in thick oak planks to the top, the pitch pine base of pegged construction with a shaped apron, single drawer and Celtic buckle design cup handle. The top with natural marking including knots, tunnels & shrinkage as well as markings of wear & discolouration from the iron bolts that kept the planks together. The good condition of the top suggests it was used with an oil cloth to protect the surface hence the tack holes to the side edges. Has been cleaned and waxed using a colourless wax and has never been painted.

Made for Meggernie Castle in Glen Lyon around 1850 by the estate carpenter, it was moved to the new shooting lodge on Invermearan/Invermeran Estate in 1872 (which was owned at the time by Meggernie Estate). It remained in Invermearan Lodge from 1872 until 1957 when it was moved before the Lodge was raised to the ground to make room for a new Hydro dam scheme. It remained on Invermearan Estate until 1998 when a series of moves by the family saw it moved first to Hungary, then Germany and finally back to Perthshire.
