Richard Vincenti Oval Four Glass Clock c1860

An early quality French oval four-glass striking mantle antique clock by Richard et Cie (movement by Vincenti et Cie) c1860. The clock is in an oval brass case with plinth and cornice mouldings. Plinth base raised on four feet. Four curved and bevelled glass panels. It has a white enamelled dial with black roman numerals and blued steel hands. The dial's bezel has its original rose-gold finish. An 8-day movement striking the hours and half hour on a bell. Brocot adjustable twin flask mercury compensated pendulum. Movement backplate stamped with the Richard et Cie full trademark and Vincenti et Cie Medaille D'Argent 1955. Supplied with keys. The clock measures 26.5 cm in height, 18 cm width and 15 cm depth. Excellent time-keeper. Watch a brief video of it striking on our website (link via dealer's page).
Fully cleaned and serviced but retaining its antique brass patina. The clock's movement is covered by a 6-month warranty in the UK.
Richard et Cie was founded in Paris in 1848 (as Lemaitre & Bergnann), adding a London branch at 24 Cannon Street in 1867 which traded as Richard & Co. Their full trademark comprises an R and C with entwined snakes in between, enclosed in an oval. Other items bearing the mark R&C are thought to denote a clock sold by the company but not made by them. The London business lasted until 1881 with the Paris workshop based at Rue Bondy continuing on until the beginning of the 20th Century.
Jean Vincenti is thought to have been a Corsican who started a factory in Montbeliard, France in 1823. He used machines he had invented to produce “roulants”(movements) for antique clocks and watches. His business however failed in 1824 and was taken over by Roux who kept the Vincenti name which by 1855 was Vincenti & Cie. The company had significant success and won several awards at Paris Exhibitions – however production ceased in 1870. Viewing by appointment only.
