Rare Table Lighter, Bergman Style, Austrian Spelter

In General
A rare and highly unusual table lighter, in the Franz Xavier Bergman style, being an Austrian cold painted spelter group from Vienna of a camel and two Arabian carpet traders, made in the Art Deco period, dated c.1930s. The paint work is original - some examples we have seen have been over painted in bright colours which takes away from its lovely original patina and feel. This is a very good quality heavy piece and has been in the same family since the 1930s so it is 100% authentic. The camel and figures are raised on a heavy black glazed base.
This sculptural group is rich with detail from the eye-catching geometric art deco decoration on the carpet to the decorative tassels on the camels reins to gold tassel on the red fez worn by the camel rider. The striker is thankfully present but does not strike as the flint is absent.
Cold painting was a technique popular during the art deco period, which started in the 1920s. Spelter figures mainly made in Vienna were hand painted in enamel paint. Cold painted Austrian spelter figure groups depicting Arabs in tents or on camels were especially sought after.
Year
Early 20th century, art deco period, c.1930s
Material
Cold painted Austrian spelter figure group
Condition
This piece is in good antique condition and is structurally sound with no cracks or restoration.
There are some paint losses mainly on the hats of the traders, the camel riders scarf and tunic, the camels tail and far side of the camels neck and tiny areas on the camels muzzle and eye brow. The single rein loops back over the camels neck and ends which is consistent with other examples which suggests that there has been no breakage. It was designed like this! There are two chips to the back front corner of the black glazed base. The wear is consistent with its age and use.
