Rare George Montague Ellwood Oak Settle c1900
A rare and fine Arts & Crafts oak settle c1900 designed by George Montague Ellwood (1875-1955) for J.S.Henry, London.
The settle has a shaped top rail with shelf and panels below and raised upholstery to the backrest and sides. The elongated front supports have a decorative foliage carved design. The settle has been fully stripped and re-upholstered in a good quality William Morris 'Voysey' fabric to include a removable seat cushion. In good condition but there has been a repair to the back legs (seen in image). Studio lighting has made the fabric look orange in colour, whereby the fabric is actually red and can be seen on last image.
I have added an image of the literature from The Studio volume 16 of 1899 page 246 where a line drawing of a similar example is illustrated as part of a feature, Scheme of Decoration for a Batchelor's Room.
162.5cm High
148cm Length
61cm Depth
46cm Seat Height
122cm Seat Width Our stock items are carefully selected by myself and I only buy good quality items which may need small repairs, a clean and a polish. I don't buy any items that need major restoration, but any loose joints are re-glued. Occasionally, some items may have small amounts of historic extinct woodworm, never enough to affect the integrity of the item, and is always treated as a matter of course. We try to describe and show our items the best we can, and we use studio lighting which sometimes lightens the colour slightly on some of the furniture. All lamps are rewired and PAT tested. Every item we sell we would have in our home (some of them have been!!) It is impossible to describe every item fully, so please feel free to email or call for more information or any queries you may have. The items will have no major defects but will show signs of normal age related wear and use. I would prefer the items to show its life rather than strip it and re-polish it, as it's only original once!
