Rare 17th Century Oyster Veneer Walnut & Laburnum
A wonderful and rare 17th century oyster veneer chest of drawers offered in excellent showroom condition.
This chest is smothered in oyster veneered patterns, with concentric circles on the top and a moulded edge above 2 short over 2 long drawers on fine quality construction.
The oyster veneer technique is using thin slices of wood branches or roots cut in cross-section, resulting circular or oval pieces of veneer which are laid side by side in furniture to produce various decorative patterns. Because the shape formed resembles an oyster shell the technique acquired the name of oyster veneering.
This chest has been beautifully made, with attention to detail on all surfaces.
Very pleasing on the eye with cross banded fronts, the drawers run smoothly and have decorative brass drop handles and pretty escutcheons.
On unusual shaped bun feet.
