Circa 1890. Attractive late 19th century mahogany open bookcase, by famous cabinetmakers Maples & Company. The upper bookcase section with four adjustable bookshelves surmounted by a neat moulded cornice with simple frieze and flanked by fluted pilasters. The base with two frieze drawers with brass swan-neck handles and mahogany drawer linings (sign of quality). The base with deeper bookshelf and a door bearing a metal label ‘Maple & Company’. All supported on shaped bracket feet.

Maple & Co was first established by John Maple but it was his son, John Maple, who pushed Maples & Co to be such a huge success. By the 1880s they exported their fine antique furniture to many different countries and were well known throughout the interiors world. During the late19th and early 20th Century they had showrooms and workshops in London, Paris and Buenos Aires.
