Pretty Regency Period Japanned Side Table c.1815

The black jappaned side table displaying typical Regency elegance with splayed legs, lower shelf, drawer, and shaped hinged lid opening to reveal a silk lined compartmentalized interior, the whole having simulated cross-banding survives from the first quarter of the nineteenth century.
In slightly tired but thoroughly charming condition the table has a few scuffs here and there but no major damage. The silk to the interior is slightly tired but original and the compartmentalization is all in tact whilst the small handle is original. We like pieces that show wear and that haven’t been restored poorly and this table has much character. We have given her a clear wax coat.
In the Regency period one of the uses of japanning was for ornamental decoration and we see this typically employed here with the charming simulated cross-banding (in this case the cross-banding on a more expensive Regency piece of this type would probably have been brass). This type of work was used on more mid-range pieces with a real saving made on the materials and labour used to make real inlay.
This table is perfect for a telephone, in a hallway or bedroom, its proportions and style meaning it can slide into almost any interior with consummate ease.
