Portrait Oil Member of the Royal Household
We are pleased to offer this superb portrait oil on canvas of a distinguished member of the Royal Household. The subject of the painting is wearing court uniform levee dress, 1st or 2nd class, as the oak leaf embroidery around the neck goes all the way round. He has his sword at his side and is wearing the red cross as a Commander of the Order of Franz Josef on a ribbon around his neck. The medals on his left breast are in order from the left, the Maltese Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO or MVO), which is given as a personal gift of the Sovereign, the King Edward VII Coronation Medal from August 1902, on a military ribbon, which was awarded only to persons who attended the Coronation or participated in the Parade, and the 1911 Coronation Medal of George V.
As the Order of Franz Josef was no longer awarded after 1918, this dates the painting to between 1911 and 1918. Unfortunately, as there are no photographs available for many of the persons in the Royal Household who held the CVO or MVO, we do not know the identity of the subject and there was no information on either the stretcher or the old frame, which was beyond redempton, so the painting has had to be reframed.
At some stage in the early life of the painting, it was reduced in size, although whether this was by the artist, or someone else, we do not know. What we do know, and can be seen in the photograph of the reverse of the painting, is that it has been on its stretcher for many years, as the tacks holding the canvas to the stretcher are old, as is the style of the wedges and the age of the wooden stretcher bars. Also, as the painting was reduced in size, the signature of the artist is missing.
The painting has been newly framed in a very complementary 3 1/2" ornate gilt frame, as the old frame was in terrible condition, and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 35 1/2" x 30" - 90.15cm x 76.2cm
Frame size 42 1/4" x 36 7/8" - 107.3cm x 93.7cm
Medium Oils on canvas
Condition Very good condition. There is one small repair to the canvas which is clean and taut. There is some craquelure to the top of the painting consistent with age. The frame is new.
