Pair Antique Hand Coloured Botanical Prints Curtis
This is a good pair of antique hand coloured engravings, part of a series published by William Curtis. These rare and delicate plates originate from: 'Curtis Botanical Magazine.' William Curtis began publication of the Botanical Magazine in February 1787 and it continued even after his death (with his son in law Samuel Curtis) almost without interruption until 1948. The images were engraved and hand-coloured by many reknowned artists. The plates are known for their fine detail and delicate hand coloring. The prints are all copper engravings to Volume 70, then continue with stone or zinc lithography until the introduction of color printing in 1948. as part of and engraved by Joseph Swan Joseph Swan (1796 - 1872). Samuel Curtis was a noted horticulturalist, in Walworth and later Glazenwood, Essex.
William Curtis (1746-1799) was an English botanist and entomologist. Curtis began as an apothecary, before turning his attention to botany and other natural history. Curtis was demonstrator of plants and Praefectus Horti at the Chelsea Physic Garden from 1771 to 1777. He established his own London Botanic Garden at Lambeth in 1779, moving to Brompton in 1789. He published Flora Londinensis (6 volumes, 17771798), a pioneering work in that it devoted itself to urban nature. Financial success was not found, but he went on the publish The Botanical Magazine in 1787, a work that would also feature hand coloured plates by artists such as James Sowerby, Sydenham Edwards, and William Kilburn.
Swan was one of a number of engravers and printers in Glasgow whose business encompassed pictures, portraits, maps, bookplates, plans, invoices, bills, bank notes, and silver work. One of his commissions was to illustrate rare plants in the collection of the Royal Botanic Institute of Glasgow.
These prints are in excellent condition and have dates for 1843 and 1847. They are very attractively presented in smart faux bamboo frames with ivory mounts. They measure 39 cms by 33 cms including the frames. We currently have 8 of these all in matching frames, please get in touch should you wish to purchase more.
PROVENANCE: These were formally the property of a Lady of Title, from her London residence in Kensington.
