Oil Painting View Halloo The Berkeley Hunt c1880

Victorian Oil Painting – View Halloo (The Berkeley Hunt) c.1880
By Charles Faulkner (British, active 1874–1900)
(This work is number 2 of 4 in Faulkner’s hunting series. The other three paintings are available to purchase separately. If you wish to acquire all four together, please contact us.)
Subject & Medium
A finely executed oil on board capturing the pivotal “View Halloo” moment in a traditional English foxhunt. Faulkner animates riders, hounds, and the Gloucestershire landscape with atmospheric Victorian precision, producing an exemplary late 19th-century sporting narrative.
Composition & Technique
Faulkner organises the scene with strong diagonal momentum:
Foreground:
Hounds depicted with tight anatomical accuracy, many shown mid-stride in full extension.
Middle Ground:
Riders in scarlet coats moving at speed through pasture and hedgerow. One is shown mid-jump, while another has been suddenly unseated behind foliage, adding dramatic tension.
Background:
A misty Cotswold–Berkeley Vale landscape rendered with soft tonal blending and muted hues, giving depth and atmosphere.
Technique:
A dynamic blend of crisp figure work and broader landscape passages creates clarity, energy, and atmospheric distance throughout the composition.
About the Hunt Scene
The painting captures the electrifying instant the fox is spotted breaking cover:
A huntsman signals with raised whip in the traditional “View Halloo” call.
The entire field reacts: hounds surge forward riders pivot sharply, leap fences, and gather pace.
The fox darts across the left of the composition—small but central to the narrative.
Winter trees, rolling pasture, and pale hills firmly situate the action within the historic Berkeley Hunt territory of Gloucestershire.
A vivid and historically grounded record of Victorian sporting life.
About the Artist
Charles Faulkner (fl. 1874–1900) was a respected British sporting painter known for:
Lively depictions of equine and canine movement
Faithful rendering of hunt attire and traditional fieldcraft
Atmospheric portrayals of the English countryside
Strong narrative compositions with dramatic momentum
His works remain highly desirable among collectors of equestrian, rural, and Victorian sporting art.
Signature
Signed “Faulkner” lower left, consistent with the artist’s established period signature.
Frame
Presented in a recently fitted decorative Rococo-style gilt frame with scrolling motifs and floral detailing, paired with museum-quality AR70 low-reflection protective glass.
The warm gilt finish complements the scarlet coats, dark horses, and earthy landscape, providing a striking, period-appropriate display of excellent visual impact.
An elegant and versatile size suitable for libraries, sporting rooms, country houses, studies, and refined interior schemes.
